Smells Like School has started

Florida summer

There is a certain smell in the air, even in the still very warm region of Florida, when it gets to the end of summer (Is that what they call the dog days?) and the fall school semester has either started or is about to start.Β  And the world just smells different, at leastΒ  it does to me.

dog days of summerback to school

For as much as I loved school, especially Math, (and so began my love of spreadsheets) I always hated when the end of summer came zooming into reality. The sweltering heat of a humid August in the Midwest, much like everyday Florida humidity, if memory serves, is a reminder that the summer fun is about to come screeching to an end.

I was an indoor girl. Oh who am I kidding? I’m still an indoor girl all these years later. I loved the freedom of the summer months because I could read to my heart’s content. I carried a big stack of books out of the library each and every week. Which was likely the only exercise I got during the summer, then or now.

book stack

The end of the summer meant that the books I was about to be reading had to do with learning things, not mystery, suspense, action or adventure, and certainly not romance. (my favorite)

Even through the thick wall of the Florida humidity, I can smell that school has started. Maybe it isn’t so much what the start of school smells like, but the “lack” of summer scents as we all trudge back into our school routine. No more tanning lotion and chlorine (or in Florida – beach sand and sea air) smells. And for me, no more smells of book paper and ink during my weekly trips to the library.

Then again, with technology the way it is today, I wonder if schools still smells the same way any more? What with electronic gadgets replacing the old stacks of spiral notebooks, pens, mechanical pencils etc. used in my day, has the scent of the school year changed along with it?

Something to ponder.Β  πŸ™‚

Is Spring in the air yet?

florida-map Spring-is-in-the-air-31

I live in Florida, so Spring is pretty much always in the air. And if it isn’t Spring here, then it’s Summer.

Fall, Winter and the word “Cold” are merely words I used to know from way back when I lived in Colorado. In the cobwebs of my mind, I do recall driving to work on icy roads with snow piled up in great mounds along the way. I miss looking at it. I don’t miss driving in it.

palm_tree_on_beach_florida_winter Ave FL temps

Winter of that caliber in Florida is only a few select days throughout the fall and winter months. No snow, but the temperature has dropped into into the twenties a few times. I can’t remember the exact number as I’m not allowed to discuss the matter with any of my friends who live north of me. Apparently I don’t know what cold is. Which is probably accurate these days. πŸ™‚

It got so chilly memeΒ  LOL – And yet it’s true.

My wish is for Spring to hurry up and get here. I want all my friends who live in the northern tundra to dig out and enjoy a life without snowdrifts everywhere, icy roads each day, and close-toed shoes as their “only” choice of footwear. πŸ™‚

Why, yes. I am barefoot right now, how did you know?

2014: It’s a brand new year with limitless possibilities

I love the first several days of the new year. I always feel like I have a fresh beginning ahead of me. I can do anything that I want to with this fabulous new year. Although, I suspect I’ll do what I usually do and just write some more books. πŸ™‚

Hopefully, I’ll write even more than I did the year before. I’m ever hoping to improve my stats.

I’ve started two new series for this year in two new genres. One is a paranormal shifters series set in my new fictional town of Spellbound, North Dakota. One is a contemporary Sci-Fi with aliens from another planet living in my other new fictional town of Cavalier, Wyoming. But I’ll also continue to write the contemporary cowboy series, Montana Double Riders. And, yes, you guessed correctly. It will continue to be set in my “other” fictional town of Enclave, Montana. Looks like this will be my biggest challenge for the new year, juggling several different series, in several different genres, and in several different states with several different fictional towns. πŸ™‚

paper and pen

But I’m excited about it. While most of the time I write on a computer, nothing makes me happier than seeing a blank piece of paper with a pen nearby. For me that visual creates even more limitless writing possibilities.

The Holiday Season

Each year, right after Halloween, comes what I call The Holiday Season. When I was a kid, I loved this time of year. I guess I still do, but the Holiday Season is certainly different for me nowadays.

For one thing, I live in a warm climate year round. It’s very interesting to walk out of 80 degree temps and into a store playing Christmas tunes to see wintery holiday displays. Even more interesting to walk back out to the 80 degree temps. It certainly makes my brain work harder to discover where in the world I am as I shop.

Another big difference is the age of my children. They are grown up now. I don’t have to fight tooth and nail during my holiday shopping experience for the latest “cool” toy or video game. I can’t say I miss it, but I will be watching the video from 15 years ago when the kids opened up all the “cool” toys I fought to acquire. Totally worth it, by the way.

home for the holidays

So now, I’ve moved into a different phase. Now instead of packing up the kids and the car to go visit family during the Holiday Season, the kids pack up a few things and come to my house to visit. Also pretty cool, if you ask me.

Will your Holiday Season be filled with ever changing events?

A log cabin in the woods, otherwise known as my happy place.

Everyone has a certain “special” place that secretly or not, makes them happy. Mine is a log cabin in the woods. I don’t think this is a surprise to anyone who knows me. And if this “is” a surprise to anyone who knows me…well…surprise! And now you know the truth. πŸ™‚

And if I’m going to dream about this simple wooded dwelling, then I might as well go big. I call this one the Log Mansion. Look at all that marvelous log cabin-y goodness. And the stones at the base only add to my delight. This is just an on-line representation of the imaginary structure in my mind.

Once inside my mythical log mansion, this an idea of what I see.

or even this in the regular log cabin of my imagination.

Basically, a nice fire place, some simple comfortable furniture, and can you hear the quiet in the above picture? I can. Once securely tucked away in my log cabin happy place in the woods, I would curl up next the the crackling fire with a book in hand and a big mug of hot tea.

There you have it. My little wood-lined happy place fantasy.

When you go to your happy place, what do you see?

The Fall Television Season, and what I want to watch.

BurnNoticedexterbreaking bad

The Fall Television Season has started and since three of my favorite shows are ending this year, Burn Notice, Dexter, and Breaking Bad, I have three slots open in my TV watching schedule. Seriously, I can only watch so much TV. Sacrifices must be made.

Therefore, I have three top replacement contenders.

My number one choice is Almost Human, starring Karl Urban. JJ Abrams is involved. Enough said. πŸ™‚

Almost Human Karl UrbanAlmost Human Cast

Second on my shortlist is The Blacklist. James Spader is deliciously awesome! Can’t wait.

The Blacklist

My third choice, certainly not the least of them is Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD. How could it not be? πŸ™‚

Agents of SHIELD agents-of-shield-poster

There are a few other shows I will at least watch once or maybe even twice to see if they are worthy of limited show watching list.Β  At the top of the list areΒ  the following:

Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Sleepy Hollow, Cold Justice, The Millers, The Crazy Ones, Mom, but then I’d have to give up my returning shows, or go to a 24/7 television watching schedule. πŸ™‚

What shows are you looking forward to in the new Fall Season Schedule?

Stress is…well stressful, and should be avoided

Now there is a title worth reading. <Do you hear that maniacal laughter? No? okay >

Anyway, I find that stress often crops up when I least expect it. Sort of like one day, I’m perfectly fine. Everything is going along smoothly, and then the next day…BAM! WTH Stress is filling my life full of…stressful things. Why? I don’t know. Make it stop.

stress induced computer biting

I don’t know if biting your laptop will help, but whatever works, right? I believe that very often us humans don’t feel like we can take a single momentary break away from that which stresses us out. They believe (okay, I’m guilty too) that stopping for a minute or two to rest your brain will somehow make everything, including the stress, even worse. But I do believe that taking even a few minutes away to regroup, whether to listen to music, or to meditate, or watch mindless television is ultimately the way to move forward and on through the stress in life.At least this is what works for me. I will take an hour or two away to read a book, watch a movie, listen to music, and yes…watch mindless television where noΒ  actual thinking or decisions are required. Some people call it taking a break. πŸ™‚

Wouldn’t it be great to write the word stress in the sand and then let the waves wash it away?

stress in the sand

I love that visual. It soothes me. Gives me hope.

And also always remember, Stressed spelled backward is Desserts.

Which is truthfully the only way I know how to spell either word. πŸ™‚

What do you do to take a breather from the stresses of life?

I’m really going to miss Burn Notice

I’ve loved Burn Notice from the first episode. I’ve watched every single show. Including one on-line a few years ago while hunkered over my computer because my DVR had a bad day. But that was okay. I didn’t want to miss a single one.

I also have the DVDs. I’ve re-watched entire seasons in a single setting (well…you know…with bathroom breaks πŸ™‚ ) and enjoyed every one again as if for the first time. Burn Notice is definitely going right into my personal Hall of Fame for favorite television shows.

Burn Notice2

Michael Weston is the perfect hero spy. Fiona Glenanne is the perfect kick-ass chick and girlfriend. Two of my favorite things. Actually, all of the characters in the show are amazing. From Madelyn to Sam Axe to Nate to Jesse, to all the people they’ve helped, and to all the bad guys they’ve thwarted…every character has been a joy to watch.

While I hate to see this show go, I’m forever a fan. I was particularly glad to see the way the final show ended. Just the way it should. πŸ™‚ I feel like I should say Thank You to Matt Nix.

Have you had a love affair with Burn Notice like I have for the past seven seasons?

13 is One of My Favorite Numbers

math geeks rockmath side with pi

I’ve always been a Math geek. I like numbers…well, let’s face it, I LOVE numbers.

13 doesn’t bother me even if it happens on a Friday, because lots of great things have happened to me on the 13th of any particular month. My brother’s birthday. The day I met my husband. The number of diamonds in my wedding set.

A few obscure highlights strung together, I know. Still, I like 13!

13 is on fire!

friday 13th

Then again I also like the numbers 7, 5, 12, 3 and 36 for various reasons.

Do you know why? Because I just LOVE numbers!!

So do you have a favorite number?

p.s. Yes, I know that yesterday was the 13th. I was busy. I forgot what day it was. I was [fill in the blank for an excuse that works]. πŸ™‚

A Day for Rememberance

I still remember vividly where I was on 9-11-01 when I heard about the tragedy.
I remember the horrific destruction, and all that followed.

Now all these years later, while the tragic memory still lingers, hope also endures. The 9-11 memorials are very inspiring to me.

I believe they represent our nation’s enduring spirit.

And the hope for our better future.
